La Información en General de la Clase

This class is designed to continue introductory information to Spanish language and culture.  Throughout this year we will be exploring Spanish using thematic units and practicing Spanish using the three modes of communication: Interpretive, Interpersonal and Presentational.  I also enjoy using new technological resources to share information with my students (and their parent) at home.  The following is a brief description of the thematic units, the communication modes, and some links to the resources we will be using this year.

Unit 1. ¡Bienvenidos!- Students will have an  introduction to the class, the teacher and basic introductory dialogue and conversation components for meeting and greeting people.
Unit 2. ¡Celebramos los Países Hispanos!- Students will explore Spanish-speaking countries in different regions of the world using maps, art and geography.
Unit 3. ¡Yo Soy Único(a)!- Students will describe one's self using personality characteristics and preferences of activities while making comparisons to personality characteristics and preferences of others in the class.
Unit 4. Los Héroes en Mi Vida-  Students will discover some well-known, influential Hispanics, what their contributions to the world were/are, and what characteristics make someone heroic.  Students will also compare and contrast themselves to the Hispanic heroes and to their own personal hero in their own life.
Unit 5. En El Restaurante- Students will model and practice restaurant etiquette and procedures like reviewing a menú, ordering politely,  and view (and hopefully try!) authentic Hispanic foods.

The modes of communication used in class for instruction and acquisition of the Spanish language are...
Interpretive- students will listen to, watch or read information in order to interpret and understand the message being conveyed in the target language.  It can also be explained as one-way receptive communication.  Examples often used in class are: Reading a small paragraph, looking at authentic pictures and writing what message is bring conveyed, listening to a radio broadcast, watching an authentic tourism video.
Interpersonal- students will produce and receive back and forth information to and from another person in the target language.  It can also be explained as two-way receptive and productive communication.  Examples often used in class are: asking and answering personal questions with a partner, passing a piece of paper back and forth to ask and write answers to a partner, using a picture prompt to ask and answer questions about it with a partner(s)
Presentational- students will create something in the target language in order to display their knowledge and understanding of information presented to them.  It can also be displayed as one-way communication using productive skills.  Examples often used in class are: create a brochure about a topic from class, write a letter to someone describing a topic from class, present information to the class about a topic.

Some of the technology resources I will be using this year are...
Google Calendar- students can use this calendar to see upcoming WAMS events for the school and/or 7th graders; upcoming assessments (formative quizzes and/or unit assessments called "IPAs"- Integrated Performance Assessments)
Google Classroom-  after receiving a specific code in class, students will have access to different Google Classrooms designated for different needs and resources like study tools and links; class announcements; and assignment locations and documents.  When it is necessary to access the Google Classroom, students will be notified in class verbally and visually and it will be posted to OnCourse Homework Portal as well.
Señor Jordan Videos- students can and will sometimes need to use this website to view videos designed and created by a Spanish teacher that explains and practices different grammar topics.

Have you ever wondered... where does Spanish come from?  Why should I learn Spanish?  How useful is Spanish to me?

Take a look at the following videos and hopefully you can get some questions to those answers....  ;)
